We have a water tank that is fed by a spring and the tank has an overflow. After heavy rainflow the spring provides more water than the overflow can handle, as a result the water level rises above the oferflow pipe.

I've installed an electronical depth sensor which can measure between 1000 - 0 mm. Usually this sensor shows 920mm when the water level reaches the overflow pipe.

However when the heavy rain causes more water the electrical sensor shows a maximum of 1000mm as the water level.

Since the lid of the water tank is quite heavy and slippery during rain this is a workaround to figure out the water level inside the tank. This model design is based on the principal of a flexible tube water level.

Printing

  • Filament: “Das Filament PLA” for the LevelGauge, “Extrudr Flex Semisoft” for the seals.
  • Infill: 100%
  • Support: No
  • Walls are optimized for: 0.4mm nozzle and 0.2mm layer height
  • 1x LevelGauge (print with holes facing the print bed)
  • 1x Seal_1.67mm or Seal_0.86mm (print all seals upright)
  • 1x HexSeal1st
  • 3x HexSeal (they are 40mm tall)

Usage

  • Water has to flow out of the overflow pipe of your tank
  • Attach the round Seal to the round pipe of the LevelGauge
  • Plug the overflow pipe by pushing the seal into the tank overflow
  • Water should flow out of the 2mm holes of the LevelGauge.
  • The highest hole where water drips out indicates the water level inside the tank and the number shows the distance from the bottom of the overflow pipe.
  • Try adding first the HexSeal1st to cover the lower holes. If your waterflow is low this will prevent water flowing faster out of the measurement tool than it can flow into it.
  • Add more HexSeals to reach the max height where you can see water.

  • In my example photos the water height inside the tank is ~165mm higher than the lowest point of the overflow
  • This model is not meant to be left in place, only temporarily to show the water level.
