BD-1 Magnetic Faceplate

This was my solution for a quick-detachable faceplate for my BD-1. This allows for easy access and maintenance of any electronics within the head. The installation is tricky, but the payoff is pretty great.

This is based on a droid model from a seemingly-obsolete seller, 3DPRINTSTUDIOEK on Etsy. I wish I could link to the exact BD-1 STLs I purchased, but it appears that they are no longer listed.

Printing

Simple print without supports, but you do need to insert the magnets (12x3mm) midway through the prints. Orientation matters, so be careful when placing them!

I recommend doing this a few layers before the magnet cavities are going to be covered. Be sure to not place the parts too close together, otherwise the magnets will pull towards each other and ruin your print.

I used Prusament PLA on my MK4 without issue.

Assembly

This is the hard part in my opinion.

I first scored the cylinder magnet holders and roughly where they need to go on the face in order to making gluing more successful. 

Then, I glued each of the four corners of the head magnets in place and allowed them to cure. 

With those in place, I magnetically snapped on all four cylinders to each corner. This lines them up. I then dabbed on glue to each cylinder and then placed the faceplate firmly into place. After 30-60 seconds of applying pressure, I removed the faceplate and all four cylinder magnets were stuck where they needed to be.

Allow everything to cure and you should hopefully have a very neat magnetically-mounted faceplate for your BD-1!
