Tried to design that for my friend who could not find a mute that fits in any shop.

Modeled it after my old cello Tourte mute and printed it in Spectrum S-FLEX 90A filament.

As each instrument's bridge is different and you may use different type of flexible filament, it may take some tweaking and few printed prototypes before finding the perfect match. The mute must sit tightly on the bridge to work properly.

Printing with a brim and really high infill/many perimeters is a must. Use a sharp knife to cut from the perimeter to the holes so you can mount it on the strings below the bridge.

The usual measurements of mutes to guide you with the tweaking:

Full size violin/small viola mute: 2.5 cm in diameter, 1.3 cm high, 4.5-6 grams

Cello mute: 3.8-4 cm in diameter, 1.5 cm high, 10-12 grams

Double bass mute:? the usual measurements (22 grams, 6 cm) didn't work for me, finding them is work in progress (if you make it work, let me know!)

Once you find the right measurement, one mute is under $1. If you have your favorite music teacher, making a truckload of them for their orchestra class is a great Christmas gift!
