I promised to print a neuron for a PhD graduation hat, expecting I could easily find one online... but I didn't.

I quickly modeled this using BlenderVR. The exported STL showed up really small in the slicer, so scale it to the size you want to have. You'll also need to cut off the tip of the axon and use a brim. I actually used a cylinder to give it even more stability. Both operations were done in PrusaSlicer. No supports necessary because all the angles are reasonably steep. Printed with a .6mm nozzle and .15mm layer height in less than 3h a piece.
Blender VR modeling:
I started with a sphere and activated the adaptive geometry feature so it makes a nice low poly model when I stretched the mesh using the sculpting tools. The software tends to crash quite often (especially when I wanted to save…) and the interface takes some getting used to, but I can definitely recommend giving it a try because it's still better than all the other VR modeling tools I tried. If you know a better VR sculpting tool please let me know!
Filament:
Das Filament PLA Thermo Rot
The filament changes its color from red over pink to white with an increase in temperature. Throw the print in the fridge for a few minutes to make it more reactive because the pigment gets stuck in rather white colors when it gets heated up to nozzle temperature.
