Pieces to construct a truncated octahedron. For a single truncated octahedron, you will require:
48 corner pieces
36 edge joiner pieces
The SVG file (for a laser cutter) contains 192 pieces of each (i.e. enough for four separate octahedron constructions).
Assembly via squares (for one truncated octahedron):
- Pair up corner pieces and join them together at right angles by slotting the corners into each other to make a star-like shape.
- Create a square shape with four corner stars and four edge joiner pieces. The corner stars should be oriented to create a horizontal plane, with the edge joiners placed vertically between them.
- Repeat the previous step five more times to create six square shapes.
- Attach four joiners to one side of a square shape to make a square boat-like shape with four upward-facing prongs.
- Repeat the previous step, leaving two boat-like shapes and four free squares.
- [fiddly] Attach four squares vertically in a diagonal / diamond configuration to one of the boats; stabilise the diamonds horizontally with four additional joiner pieces.
- Turn the other boat upside down and attach to the stabilised structure. Congratulations! You now have either a truncated octahedron, or another equally interesting construction. Feel free to take a picture and link to this with "Post a Make".
