Ionic bonding puzzle to help students practice finding the ratios between atoms based on their charge. In the design of this kit, I decided to make it more generic than other similar activities and didn't include any specific element or polyatomic symbols on the tiles. This way, the tiles can be used to represent any cations or anions with a charge of +- 1, 2, or 3.

A complete student-facing activity using this model to explore ionic bonding can be found for free here:

To print in multicolor:

Positive Cations: first 1 mm light color, remaining dark color
Negative Anions: final 1 mm light color, remaining dark color
Case: first 1 mm dark color, remaining light color

For rainbow color pattern:

  • +3 | Red
  • +2 | Orange
  • +1 | Yellow
  • -3 | Green
  • -2 | Blue
  • -1 | Purple
  • Case | White
  • Dark number for all pieces | Black

I have also made a version that uses embedded magnets instead of pins:
