 Introduction

We ordered some custom made doors for the cupboards in our kitchen but wanted to mount the hinges ourselves to get them just right. So I made a jig for routing them out and another one for pre drilling the holes.

Method

The jig is designed in FreeCAD and has two main driving dimensions: distance_from_side and distance_from_bottom, which decide where the hinge cup eventually ends up.

The jig is made for “överfalsade” (can't seem to find a translation for that) doors with these hinges:

The jig is designed to work with a 12 mm straight router bit, but that can be changed in the paramters of the FreeCAD model.

The reason for the angled face along the router path is so that the jig can match my custom router base plate and get a good grip and the correct depth every time.

Result

The current implementation of the jig is made to put hinges at the correct distance from the side (to fit the linked hinges) and 80 mm up from the inner part of the cupboard doors. If the jig is used with a clamp then it is very sturdy.

Discussion

The diameter the resulting hole is very snug and some elbow grease is requied to make it fit. This might, of course, not be the case for your print but then it is a s simple as modifying the hinge_cup_hole_dia parameter.

Some material could have been saved by making the face opposite the router a bit smaller but with the current design the whole radius of the router base plate is supported, hopefully minimizing tilting error.
