Space Shuttle bookends. Supportless single color print.
Comes in three files. The Front and Back bookends, and a thin sheet. For stability of the bookend (keeps it from sliding away from the books), glue a copy of the sheet to the bottom of each bookend. The thinness of it allows for cutting it down to a smaller size if desired, as that limits how close the ends can come to each other. Also the thinness is gentler on books, as the book hanging off the edge doesn't have to distort to rest on the shelf.
Print each bookend at whatever scale you choose. 100pct is good for smaller books, but it can be printed larger or smaller depending on your needs.
A stiff material such as PLA might be better than the more flexible materials, but the design has very thick supports, so maybe it doesn't matter. I've only printed in PLA+, and it is quite sturdy.
Supports are NOT RECOMMENDED or needed. Make sure to rotate the prints so the ship is vertical (nose up, tail up).
Slice it however you want. Mine was at 0.20 layer height with a 0.4 nozzle on a Creality Ender 3v3 SE printer, so nothing fancy is needed. :)
Thanks to MargetaCG for the Space Shuttle model. I cut off the boosters and left the ship flying. Included are the blender files for those who want to vary the design.
The NASA and Space Shuttle logos on the bookend verticals came from the NASA website and were run through the excellent website https://3dp.rocks/lithophane/ to make them 3D. I simplified the geometries in Blender to turn the grid pattern into large triangles making the files much smaller without sacrificing detail.
Version History:
Version 2 replaced SigmaParrot's shuttle with the low poly shuttle by MargetaCG, since the original didn't print well at reduced sizes (thin walls). Version 2v2 had a more dynamic flying orientation for the shuttle (nose up), with the logos moved under the shuttle. Version 2v3 has fixed the smallest thrusters to not have a slight disconnect, making them much sturdier. Also increased the thickness of the Shuttle Logo to give it more pop!
