This model is designed to be used by students alongside/after my Periodic Table Grid model.

Students learn how to derive the chemical formula of a named ionic compound.

First the correct ion discs are selected for the named compound given.

e.g. Magnesium chloride - the discs Mg2+ and Cl- .

The discs are placed on two boards, chosen according to the charge on each ion.

The boards are then pushed together to fit the protrusions on the positive board into the notches on the negative board until all protrusions are occupied. This will require the selection of another Cl- disc and board. The formula of magnesium chloride is MgCl2.

The model was printed in PLA at 0.2mm layer height. The discs require a colour change at 1.2mm. The boards require colour changes at 1.2mm and 2.2mm

A box is also provided, a piece of filament is used for the hinge.
