It all started as a quick 5 minute job to mount a cheap RPM counter to my mini lathe. Well, that's what I thought…

You can get the 12V version off Amazon here

I ended up completely re-designing the change gear cover for the mini lathe as I didn't want to drill new holes into the metal parts of the lathe, and I genuinely despised the crappy change gear cover that came with the mini lathe.

The result is a neat way to mount the proximity sensor magnet on the back spindle of the lathe, mounting the proximity sensor and the display. The gear cover is split in two, so I can remove the bottom part to get access to the change gears without interfering with the RPM display mount. It also made the whole design more print friendly.

While I was at it, I added a place to store the common tools I use on the lathe (chuck key, 10mm spanner and ER32 collet tool). I tapped power for the display from the lathe so it switches on when the lathe switches on. I built a little 12V psu into the lathe electronics bay but I'd rather not go into details with this part seeing as it can be risky if you're not comfortable working with mains voltages.

I'm pretty happy with the result; I was initially concerned that the single magnet arrangement will give very slow updates on RPM changes but in practice it's perfectly acceptable.
