Purpose

I was annoyed when I had to open the top of the printer, and had nowhere to put the glass. And when I wanted to prop it open just a bit, I had to use a wedge of some sort.

This new handle for the top glass serves three purposes.

Normal handle

Just like the normal handle, allows you to grip and open the top glass. It's not as smooth as the original, but it does the job.

Vent spacer

When printing PLA you might want to keep the lid open a bit to allow the printer to cool more. Turning the glass panel upside down, this handle will rest on the frame and keep the lid ajar.

Panel hanger

When you need to get the panel fully out of the way, but have no place to put it, you can hang the panel on the side of the printer. I do not recommend hanging it on the left side while the head is moving, as it looks like the chain might push it off there. The right side should be fine.

Assembly

Ingredients:

  • Two m3x30 screws
    • Up to m3x37 can be used without issue
    • Make sure to not use countersunk screws. You may explode your glass
    • The heads of the screws should be out of the way of the printhead, so it shouldn't matter if the head sticks out.
  • Two m3 hex nuts
  • Two plastic bushings that are part of the original handle assembly. They should be around the screws

Installation

  1. Remove the old handle.
  2. Take the two existing bushings. We'll reuse them
  3. Make sure the hook part of the handle points towards the long side of the glass.
  4. Put the bushings around the screws with the wide side towards the screw head.
  5. Put the hex nuts into the hex shaped holes.
  6. Screw it all up!
