The indalo was discovered in 1868 by Antonio Gongónia y Martinez, and over time it became a local symbol of luck that people depicted at the entrance to their house to keep evil spirits at bay. In the mid-20th century, a cultural revival took place in the region where the sign was found, led by painter Jesús de Perceval. This movement takes the indalo as its symbol. During one of their meetings they give the sign the name indalo because it would resemble an acquaintance of Perceval, Indalecio. The patron saint of Almería is also called San Indalecio. Today the indalo is the symbol of the province of Almería.
