I made this toy fishing rod for my son, who loves fishing. It used a ½" x 48" wooden dowel as its base, with parts assembled using M3 nuts and bolts. The following parts can/should be printed in PLA:
Reel Housing x1
Line Guide x4
Grip_V2 x1
Magnet_Hook x1
The following parts can/should be printed in something stronger like PETG:
Reel_Arm x1
Reel_Sprocket x1
Reel_Handle x1
There is a pic attached showing how the reel assembly snaps together.
The magnet hook accepts 3 cylindrical magnets, 5mm x 5mm. These should be a press fit, but I added some glue just to be sure they will not fall out.
The trickiest part for me was drilling the 1/8" holes through the wooden dowel accurately. In hindsight, a design that does not require drilling any holes would be better, maybe version 2 can go that route.
After assembling, I added a few feet of butcher's twine (any string will work honestly) and tied the magnet to the end. Next step is to find some fish! (that are magnetic of course).
