Big Chill Twin Engine Build  *** Developer Page ***

!!! This Build does not meet the same easy to build and dependability standards of other Black Crow models. This is for people that like to push the limits !!!

This is a modification to the original Big Chill Pontoon boat found here- https://www.printables.com/model/797773-big-chill-rc-pontoon-boat-18-scale-by-black-crow

This is an advanced build. - More difficult wiring, Limited space, Pushing the limits of the battery. No assembly video at this time.

Why release it when it is not absolutely complete?

Two reasons. First, to take you along for the ride in the development of a model. You can follow along by reading the results in the test section and see the changes as they develop. Second, to allow others to contribute. If you like more of a challenge you can build and make suggestions.

Important Notes:

Center pontoon - The front and middle sections need to be assembled and attached to the boat before the rear section is attached. Otherwise the hook section of the center section will not slide in.

ESCs- Watch the video to understand how to setup two ESCs to one receiver. I personally remove the center wire on one side of the Y connector.

The motor wires on the ESCs will need to be extended about 2-3 inches.

The motor wires on the second ESC are not in the wire duct. They are loose on the bottom of the boat and feed into the rear bumper.

I am using two Quicrun 60 amp ESCs

Props- You are going to need counter rotating props. Without them the boat wants to flip over making it difficult to control. The video show what happens without counter rotating props.

Added ski bars to parts list as an option to replace top. The bars use two 4mm x 100mm rod inside to make them stronger. Comes with speaker option. (edited was 5mm) parts include speaker housing and speakers

Test log: (work in progress. Feel free to suggest improvements)

July 6-2024- Testing twin 1450kv motors. The 1 450kv does not work on the single motor Big Chill with the suggested prop. It ratios out and overloads the battery. By dividing the work load between the to motors it should allow the motor to spin up to speed without bogging down.

Test Results:

  1. The Center Rear pontoon is blocking the props creating a wall of water between back of boat and outboard. (Solution- Trim pontoon)
  2. The 1450kv motors are killing the battery quickly. Brown out? shutting the ESC off at half battery charge. ( Poor flow of water stopping boat)
  3. Launches very well! Then cavitates.

Notes: not in order.

1)I need to do better wire management under the bed. However the RX box keep popping up making it hard to put the bed on. I will add a screw.

2) Fits on the trailer. Very little tongue weight.

3) Trim Center Rear Pontoon. ( New pontoon designed ) will test tomorrow

July 7-2024- Swapped CenterRear pontoon… Successes !!! No longer pushing a wall of water, cavitating and killing the battery. I believe the two 1450kv motors are going to work. Please note that I could not stay in the throttle very long due to limited distance and control. Once you get it tuned in, staying in the throttle for an extended amount of time might be stressful to the battery.

Notes:

1)Trim adjustments become more important.

2)It got up to speed and leveled out very nicely.

3) You definitely need counter rotating props!!

July 14-2024 The 0.8m 15T Steel gears fit nicely in the original outboard housing. The larger steel teeth are more forgiving and stronger. I am still waiting for the counter rotating props to come in.

What NOW !! The weekend is over. I am ordering another set of props. Maybe this time I will get what I order. Testing will resume when I get the parts.
