I originally made this model as a sketch for a tensegrity robot joint idea that I had. I started off with this elongated form which kind of looks like an hour glass. I believe this part would be almost impossible to mill: the two conical sections are completely intertwined, but not touching at all.

See tensegrity wikipedia article here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tensegrity

After printing, just add wire or 2mm rope through the holes, knot it up and it magically floats.

Print in place, and you probably want supports, and warning, the supports are a major pain to remove on this model. Definitely want to be careful with needle nose pliers or something related.

I plan to make a revision of this to cover the top and bottom, and allow tensioning of the strings.

I then want to try making this into a cool looking robot joint.

Print settings I used:

  • Elegoo Rapid PETG
  • Fine tune Print speed of 125%.
  • 85ºC bed temperature
  • 240ºC Nozzle termperature
  • 30% fan speed
  • Prusa MK4

I am sure these are not the optimal settings, nor filament, I am very new to 3D printing. It's just what I started with, and it worked the first time. Feel free to experiment.

Regards,

Dave
