After a couple years of use, our IKEA Ingared lamp shades started to luck dull. Partly because of some UV or age related discoloration and partly because they had greasy child-fingerprints all over them. Unfortunately you can not wash the default lamp shades as they are glued onto the frame and quite brittle, so…

… I designed and printed a new one! :-)

How to install - no tools or glue required!

  1. Disconnect the lamp from the power source
  2. Unscrew the light bulb
  3. Loosen the black lock ring around the fixture and remove the old lampshade assembly
  4. Peel of the old shade from the mounting ring (Note: This will destroy it! - Be careful with the small plastic splinters)
  5. Insert the mounting ring into the new lampshade. Doing this at a slight angle helps.
  6. Gently push the ring over the first row of ripples. The lampshade will snap right into place (Note: I designed this for a wall thickness of ~0.6 mm. If you go for significantly thicker walls, this step might require a little more force).
  7. Optional: You can install the second ring on the upper part as well. This is not necessary for the self supporting 3D printed shade and actually looks worse with translucent materials, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Recommended material and print settings

  • PLA or PETG works just fine - The material I used was recycled PLA.
  • Vase mode, no bottom layer
  • No supports, 5 mm brim
  • Wall thickness: 0,6 mm - You can adjust this, depending on the translucency of the material you are using and the desired effect. 0.6 mm works well for matte materials. If you use something like transparent PETG, you could raise this to 0.8 mm or even 1.0 mm. (Note: If you push this too far, you might have some trouble getting the shade over the ring).

I would love some feedback if you printed this model - so please upload a picture of your makes!

Happy printing!
