My wife had gotten into using fountain pens the last year or two, and asked me if I could design her something for using ink samples. There is the Ink Miser Ink-shot one can purchase that is not uncommon to see used, but it has a few shortcomings that we wanted to address.
The narrow section at the bottom has been designed to allow for most standard nibs to fit neatly with maximum ink uptake, while the flaring top section is more forgiving on more ink being poured.
This version:
- should work well for use with getting ink from both normal bottles and small samples.
- has a spout for pouring ink back when done filling pens
- has a wide enough base for good stability
- is more open at the top, but has a narrow section on the bottom.
- makes small amounts of ink fairly usable by increasing the depth of smaller amounts of ink
- allows for larger amounts (e.g. when pouring from a standard bottle) with less risk of overflow
If printed with a resin printer it should work well as-is. When printed with an FDM printer some sort of sealing should be considered in order to prevent loss, seepage, and mixing. For the latter I've used some spray sealant, but even silicone caulk should do the trick.
For FDM printing also be sure to increase the wall count in order to get the stem to be fully solid.
