No supports needed, use a few walls to make sure it's stiff enough. Just slides over the top of the spool holder, may need tapping on depending on tolerances. Will also stiffen up the upright on that side, bonus!

I used Corwell CNC to have it cut out of carbon fiber sheet. It may work printed but it would have to be pretty thick.
The cardboard spools have a void space in the middle so if you run your spool on bearings, you'll have a problem with the cardboard spools. This tube slides in nicely and the end-cap friction fits tightly so it's reusable.
