Using these model rocket fin guides is very different from the upright 3-at-a-time guide sold by Estes. But when you get used to it, it is easier and quicker.

These guides hold the body tube parallel to a plane at the precise height each fin should be placed. Simply rotate the tube and slide the fin into position. Includes a gusset to prevent glue build-up over time, and a position guide on the end that can mark 3-fin and 2 or 4-fin positions.

These work quickest and best if you use super glue with an accelerator to tack the fins in place before reinforcing with a wood or paper (Elmer's) glue. See below for detailed instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • If you are able to get a clean undistorted print with the top face down, you will avoid the need for supports. Otherwise, grid-style supports are recommended.

  • You'll notice some small cut-out geometry on the end near the hanging hole. The first and second of these are 90 degrees apart, for marking 4-fin locations. The first and last are 120 degrees apart for marking 3-fin locations.

  • To use the fin marking guides, place one mark. Then line that mark up with the first straight edge on the marking guide, and add a second mark at either the 90 degree or 120 degree guide line. Rotate the tube and repeat until you have all marks complete.

  • NOTE: The dimensions of these blocks is ideal for 3/32 in (2.38mm) fins which are standard in most Estes kits. It works well as-is with most other sizes, and in any case holds the fins parallel to the rocket body. HOWEVER, if using a 2/32 fin and seeking perfection, place the fin on a stack of 9 post-it note papers on the guide block for the exact correct placement. For a 1/32 fin, use a stack of 18.

  • To glue fins:
    • Place the body tube in the tube guide.
    • Rotate the tube so a fin mark lines up the edge of the guide.
    • Put some super glue on the connecting edge of the fin.
    • Slide the fin against the body tube, aligned by the flat face of the guide.
    • Mist with super glue accelerator to avoid waiting for the glue to dry.

  • Repeat until all fins are glued.

  • Optionally, reinforce the fins with a bead of wood (Elmer's) glue.
