This is ongoing project and will still require development!

My personal progress blog on the project can be found here. As I hit major milestones in the project, I will periodically update those files. I'm receptive to the idea of incorporating any branch builds or changes into the original.

Project Status:

I can't dedicate as much time as I would like to this project anymore, so I'm opening it up to the community at large in hopes that it'll evolve faster than with just me plugging away at it here and there.

The enclosure is technically usable, but a lot of small improvements and changes can be made. My current focus are the friction hinge portion and magnetic clasp system.

The circuitry/internal electronics are still mostly conceptual aside from major components like keyboard and InkPlate. More extensive development needed on that and the software/firmware.

The plan is to utilize open source firmware resources from the Zerowriter project once released in 2024/25.

Hardware Parts List:

**The friction hinges I used were surprisingly difficult to locate outside of China (aliexpress). I have ordered a quantity and will be making them available here for purchase for those in the US who don't want to order (or wait for overseas shipping) directly from China. The rest of the components are relatively easy to source.

Known gremlins:

Enclosure:

  • The last revision vastly improved the gasket ring cutout and installation, but there's room for improvement

  • The magnet clasp are either too deep, not strong enough, or both. Need to be scrapped, redesigned, or improved to actually firmly hold lid shut.

  • The friction hinge works ok, but I find myself wanting to redesign to keep it more rigidly centered and easier to print/assemble. It could be better.

  • Visual 'sculpting' of edges, corners, and etc.

  • The button inserts work well, but Id like to improve them further.

  • Addition of battery tray, PCB standoffs, and etc (see "electronics" notes)

Electronics:

  • Determine power delivery system for keyboard and InkPlate (including 3v->5v conversion, keyboard wake from InkPlate)

  • Determine communication protocol/system for keyboard to interface with InkPlate

  • Determine power consumption and optimal battery size and form factor (currently designing around Adafruit ASD1283)

  • Design single unified PCB for data and power

Other:

  • Project needs an official name
