The Convair B-36 "Peacemaker" was a strategic bomber developed by the United States in the late 1940s. It was the largest mass-produced piston-engine aircraft ever built and the first bomber capable of delivering nuclear weapons from the U.S. to any global target without refueling. Powered by six radial engines and four jet engines, the B-36 had an impressive range of over 10,000 miles (16,000 km) and could carry up to 86,000 pounds (39,000 kg) of bombs. Though it never saw combat, the B-36 played a key role in Cold War deterrence, bridging the gap between World War II-era bombers and modern jet bombers like the B-52. It remained in service from 1949 to 1959.
