This is my mathematically correct wormhole chessboard that is also magnetic!

Check out the video!

Its designed to be printed on a 220x220 build plate.

WHY?

You see, I love chess, and math, and 3d printing! so I combined all of my favorite things into one! This board is an eye catcher of a piece, whilst still fully functional. It is apparently quite hard to play, and has some new interesting rules!

What Makes this Design Unique?

This one-of-a design is unlike any other! I will mention another design by DaveMakesStuff on a brilliant wormhole design. However it was not to my likings.

  1. it doesn't clearly represent the fabric of space; which is curved, and the idea of a wormhole is that it makes a “shortcut” through it. his design was just 2 planes connected.
  2. the magnets were on the outside; I prefer the looks of a cleanly made chess board with the magnets concealed.

My design improves upon this concept, making the two planes interconnected, whilst having the aesthetic look with the magnets hidden! it really gives a magical feeling!

Ease of use

this design isn't quite a challenging print, but does require a well tuned printer.

Minimal Waste

This design doesn't require a lot of supports, which is great! the total amount of supports is only 46.84 Grams! I could of designed it with no supports, but i like the Euclidian design of it, and not having to glue the base together is neat.

Slicer Settings and Numbers

Print settings:

Material: PLA

Layer height: 0.2mm

Infill: 20%

Wall count: 3

Support material: tree support - only used under the wormhole: see photo reference

Use supports only under the gap, and undet the main board. My support angle is set to 30 Degrees. using organic support

Chess Pieces

For anyone who has already printed my Single Colour Mini Chess Board, if you scaled it down, you can apply the same scale to fit your already made pieces. Anyone else new, you will need to make the pieces found at the link above.

Magnets

The board uses 6x3mm Neodymium magnets, a total of 160 for the board. The pieces will add an additional 32 magnets.

Material Cost

If the base is printed at 100% scale with the recommends settings, it uses with supports, 669.55g, total net weight is 622.71g. It does require support! use organic!

The individual squares don't need supports, but they most definitely need Mouse Ears, or a brim. when printing with a brim, the brim HAS to be securely on the bed. otherwise they will look like this:

the brim wasn't low enough, which led to the part failing.

or, you can orient them to use supports.

How to print

Setting up for print is quite easy!

there are 4 files:

Test Square: Print as oriented WITH BRIM

Base: only print once - brim not recommended but optional

S1: print twice in black, and twice in white WITH BRIM

S2: print twice in black, and twice in white WITH BRIM

File info:

the test square is to test your printers capability printing a piece as its oriented. If it cant, or it comes out looking bad, you will need supports for the pieces.

The base is pretty explanatory. you only need to print one.

S1: this is the first lot of squares; you will have to print this file a total of 4 times, twice in black and twice in white.  the same goes for S2.

you could fit more pieces onto a plate, but the more pieces means the more chance of one failing. so please print each one respectively.

Assembly:

Using the labeled diagram, here is the legend:

1 - I_C (Inner Curve)

2 - O_C (Outer Curve)

3 - S_S (Standard Square)

4 - W_O_L  (Wormhole Outer Left)

5 - W_P (Wormhole Pentagon)

6 - W_O_R (Wormhole Outer Right)

7 - W_M_R (Wormhole Middle Right)

8 - W_I_R (Wormhole Inner Right)

9 - W_I_M (Wormhole Inner Middle)

10 - W_I_L (Wormhole Inner Left)

11 -  W_M_L (Wormhole Middle Left)

assemble the pieces in a checkerboard pattern. Make sure the BOTTOM RIGHT SQUARE is WHITE! This is just to be chess related, where h1 is white. its essential for the game mechanics, otherwise your board will be inverted!

use a glue like superglue, or 3d gloop for the squares. make sure you put the magnets in with the same polarity.

Happy 3d Printing!
