The Antonov An-72 is a Soviet-designed transport aircraft known for its unique "Coandă effect" wing configuration, where its jet engines are mounted above the wings. This design improves short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities, making it suitable for operating on short, unpaved runways and in harsh conditions. First flown in 1977 and entering service in the 1980s, the An-72 was developed for military and civilian use, capable of transporting cargo, troops, or performing specialized missions. Its versatility and reliability have earned it the nickname "Cheburashka," due to its distinctive engine placement that resembles the ears of the famous Russian cartoon character.
