The heatsink of a Noctua NH-U12A is quite large and heavy. Although the motherboard should be capable of supporting its weight under normal circumstances, I don't want it to destroy my motherboard under less ideal circumstances (transporting, wear, aging).
This bracket can be slid onto the fan bracket that goes on the side of the case, if mounted in the lowest position. When installed, the bracket touches the heatsink, but is not actively supporting it. However, it will prevent it from moving down any further.
Your mileage may vary, as it largely depends on your motherboard and how you mounted the cooler, but it should be easy to remix this part for other configurations (I have an ASUS Pro WS W680-ACE motherboard).
