After I decided to use IKEA Samla boxes (22L) to store my filament and created my own silica container, I saw some nice remixes, like this. So redesigned my silica container to improve some things:

  • shorten the lower part to save filament (now it's around 60g filament per container)
  • retractable lid to ensure secure closure when in use
  • holes instead of slots for better stability even with thinner walls
  • thinner walls (1.2mm) for faster prints
  • larger interior for around 10% more space

The rest is still the same… They are stackable an can keep 4 to 6 filament spools (depends on the spool width).

Each silica container can now hold up to 250g of silica gel (2 containers = 500g, 4 containers = 1000g). You need 4 of them to fill a whole Samla box, but I decided to fill up only 2 with silica gel. My test Samla box hold up 4 spools at 10% humidity for months now.

The parts are printed in PLA with standard quality (0.20mm layer height, 15% infill). I printed pairs of the container. If you have problems to put the lid on the container, try to add X-Y-hole compensation with 0.1 or 0.2 mm. My P1P needs this, if I don't have calibrated the filament.

Clone and Mirror the model in the slicer to get a pair of the containers. The included 3mf file contains a plate with a pair of containers and a plate with a set of funnels.

Hints for printing:

I use a layer width of 0.6 mm (with 0.4 nozzle) for outer and inner walls with Arachne wall generator, to imporve the print speed. But to get the small holes printed nicely, I had to reduce the print speed of outer walls to 50mm/s.

I recommend to print with brim enabled (5mm) for the container and the funnel, to prevent detachment from the print bed while printing!
