I wanted a large desiccant box to fit in my filament drawer, but there wasn't something that would just fit in the area I had, so I used this to get more experience with CAD.

Inspired by another design I saw on Thangs, but I needed a different size and wanted to make it so it printed flat for better strength. So this is a completely new model.

The files are available to modify on OnShape.  I tried a few different sizes, and it may still need a bit of tuning to look perfect, but it's working now, so feel free to use it!

If you want a specific size, let me know and I can upload it.

STL and STEP files are 100x100x50mm, shown in the image below:

But other sizes can be generated in OnShape to whatever you want:  200x200x50:

Printing:

Print it flat using auto-orient.

Print 2 lids, 2 sides, and 2 fronts.  The design is fully symmetric.

I printed in PLA with a 0.4mm nozzle with 0.2mm layers.  It can probably be printed with thicker layers just fine.

WARNING: if you print really big ones (greater than 200mm), I found that the sides may bulge out a bit over time from the weight of the desiccant if you print it in PLA.  So for larger ones, it is best to use PETG or ASA/ABS…

Prints fine without support, but the one screw hole could be supported if you wish.  It would only add a small amount of filament/time.

Assembly:

Slide the front/back pieces into the half-dovetail cutouts in the side pieces (the ones with the larger screw boss).  Then add the other side piece by aligning the dovetails and sliding together with the front/back.

Slide the lid into the bottom and top.

Closure:

You can add M3 heat-set inserts and 5-10mm M3 cap-head screws

-or-

(new 2025/01) Use 10-12mm M3 cap-head screws without heat-set inserts

Using:

Fill it using the included funnel so you don't get tiny balls all over the place.  I printed mine in TPU, but it should work in any filament.

Changes:

  • 2026/01/30: Added a tall skinny 40x300x40 box (you're on your own for a funnel?)

  • 2025/01/05: Uploaded more sizes and made screw hole smaller so a M3 screw can be used without a heat-set insert.  Added funnel design.
