I designed this to have an easy template to use to drill 3 holes through 70 2x12 roofing joists. Marks every inch and half inch as well as at 5 5/8, which is half of a finished 2x12 (11 1/4in) I just glued the pieces together but the design could be remixed to allow for a better attachment method. If you use just the top piece, it will be centered in a traditional 2x6 board. the 4" extension was so that I could space it out from a wall.
