P1 to X1 Upgrades

Bambu Lab's X1 series printers are amazing printers, but the price tag that comes with them can be a little offputting for the average hobbyist, so naturally, many of us chose the P1 option, which is still a great printer, with fewer features. For the price, it's unbeatable. As I started to use mine more I began to wish for some of those features; however, I was unwilling to spend the $1,200 to get them. luckily there are some cheap DIY options out there.

• Touch Screen 2.8in - 5in (The one pictured is the 2.8in)
• AI Print Failure Detection
• Chamber Temp Sensor (I know it's not part of the X1, but it is incredibly helpful when trying to print materials like ABS)

I decided to use the X-touch screen for this because it was cheap, compared to the $60 Panda Touch. I am currently using the 2.8in touchscreen because that is currently the only one officially supported, but the 5in is in progress and there are also some forks for it now that do work. I am also using the Octoeverywhere AI detection because that is the only one that will work with the camera already on the printer, and it is completely free. I CADed a 2-in-1 mount and enclosure for the screen and Raspberry Pi. In total it costs around $30-40 USD to do all the upgrades, a much better price than the extra $800 to get an X1. The last feature of the X1, Lidar, will probably never be possible for the P1, and I don't care because I have never had a bad bed leveling.

I currently can't get the .gifs for Assembly instructions to work so if you need more detailed instructions you will have to look for this model on maker world.

2.8in screen instructions

1. Purchase items in the Bill Of Materials below except for the 5in screen
2. Print out ALL parts
3. Set up Raspberry Pi Zero WH using the instructions linked HERE
4. Set up the touch screen using the instructions linked HERE
5. Strip and crimp wires to be used in the GPIO pins
6. TURN OFF THE PRINTER
7. Remove and unplug the original screen
8. Feed wires through the holes and mounting plate and plug in the temp sensor
9. plug-in the other components and use the adapter for the 2.8in screen

I use a Micro USB in this, USE THE JST LINKED IN THE BOM

1. Assemble and screw together and lock into printer
2. Enjoy your printer's new functionalities

5in Screen Instructions

Notes

• If you do not have the right crimper at your disposal then you will need to purchase the ones that are in the Dupont Crimp Kit.
• If you use the 5in screen the current fork does not allow the chamber temp sensor.
• If you purchase the 2.8in screen as a test and want to upgrade to the 5in, you don't need to print anything else!

I will be purchasing the 5in soon to test so if you decide to use the 5in and there are issues please let me know so I can fix it
