Leave a like and post a make if you print! I would love to see it.

I primarily use eSUN filaments because they are affordable and consistently produce high-quality prints that look great, but their new cardboard spools introduce some issues on roller spool mounts. I use the Sunlu filadryer S4 to dry my filament and also to print from. It works great except that due to the spools sitting on rollers, when cardboard spools get low and therefore light in weight they can be pulled upwards and jammed against the inside of the dryer instead of rolling when the print head makes quick movements and yanks on the filament. This causes layer artefacts or can even cause a print to fail if the spool gets properly stuck. I don't own one but I've seen the same problem reported for the Bambu AMS system. Adding a bit of extra weight to the spool prevents this from happening as its weight means it will stay down and roll instead of being yanked up towards the Bowden feeding tube.

There were a few existing models for this concept but none seemed to be exactly what I wanted - with comments saying they don't work for the eSUN cardboard spools or they used different weights from what I wanted. So I modelled my own from scratch that uses 7x AA batteries as the weights (design has been updated since the photos to fit 2 more batteries). Get the cheapest ones you can find and put drops of superglue on the sides of them before inserting. It fits perfectly on the eSUN cardboard spools (likely will fit other cardboard spools but not guaranteed), and I haven't had the issue occur since using it.

There are also install tools included that can be used to get a much better grip on each side to easily fasten or unfasten the two halves.

Printing:
  • Press split to parts in the slicer to separate the parts.
  • Use ABS, ASA, PETG, or other heat resistant material if you will be using it in a spool dryer feeder such as the filadryer S4, as PLA will soften with the heat.
  • For both sides of the spool weight - no supports are required, place each end down on the outside face.
  • For the install tools, place the parts on their pins and use supports on build plate only

I also use these printed rings to ensure smoother rolling of the card spools. However I found the diameter of the eSUN cardboard spools is slightly inconsistent as sometimes they just barely don't fit (they also shrink slightly when dried). To remedy this I have a second set printed in a different colour at 100.4% scale which always fit when the unscaled ones do not.
