I am running an ADS-B basestation with selfmade antennas on my balcony. But since I am not living on top of a mountain I was always curious, which range I could get with my setup. So I designed a portable ADS-B antenna that I can take with me during hiking. This antenna can be hold up in the air by hand or placed on a flat surface. To avoid a long signal cable, the USB SDR receiver is directly connected to the antenna with an SMA to N type adapter. The connection between receiver and computer is done over an USB extension cable. I use the ClockworkPi uConsole with TAR1090 installed on it (along with all necessary scripts).
Material:
- AirNav RadarBox FlightStick Receiver
- USB extension cable
- SMA (male) to N (male) adapter (example: https://at.rs-online.com/web/p/koaxial-adapter/1246803)
- N type panel connector (example: https://at.rs-online.com/web/p/koaxial-steckverbinder/8194443)
- Crimp ring terminal (depending on wire size)
- M3 bolts & nuts
- Copper wire
- 2 mm screws
Check out attached pictures of how to assemble the antenna. The monopole is approx. 67 mm long, the radials approx. 75 mm. Here is a link for a more detailed description: https://m0ukd.com/calculators/quarter-wave-ground-plane-antenna-calculator/
Insert the shaft into the base, attach the antenna to the receiver and feed the USB cable through the shaft. The hood needs to be mounted with two 2 mm screws.
Note: the long shaft is printed with Prusa XL, the short one can be printed with MK4s or similar.
Attached you can find a screenshot of the maximum range that I was able to get during hiking.
