A simple but effective geometric bracelet design that can be sized to suit, unusual in that it is a one-piece 3D object that can be made with a laser cutter. To do this we misuse a T-shirt press. Both of these tools can be found in most Fab Labs.
The SVG file contains two bracelets: The top one still has all the construction work so you can see how we did it, and the lower one is all combined in a single ready-to-cut shape.
You can of course print the STL file instead and warm it up on the printer's hot bed to make it flexible, but this is less exciting.
You will need:
- Acrylic sheet
- T-shirt press
- Non-stick sheet for T-shirt press
- Heatproof gloves
- Tin can about the diameter of the intended wrist
To Make
Cut the bracelet on a piece of flat acrylic, 3-4mm thick. Put it in the T-shirt press sandwiched with a non-stick layer underneath and above it. If you leave a bit of non-stick sheet sticking out it will be a lot easier to remove the sandwich while wearing gloves. Set the press for 180C, place the tin can nearby and put on your gloves.
You only get one shot, so make sure everything is ready before you press the acrylic.
Ok, put on gloves and press the acrylic for 30 seconds. YMMV, but you want it to be flexible rather than squashed flat. Remove the acrylic and quickly remove the non-stick sheeting. Rapidly form it around the can with your gloves. It will harden quickly. Sometimes having a friend around to pull the sheets off quickly helps.
Before it fully hardens, slide it off the tin, slightly flatten the bracelet to an oval on the bench, and prise the two ends apart so that the wearer's wrist will only just fit in the gap sideways.
Stand around feeling like a lemon until the acrylic hardens.
Make sure it is no longer hot before wearing!
Notes
You can use other geometric shapes, but keep them the same size and with no steep internal corners or the bracelet will distort when bending.
If you got the size wrong, the acrylic can be boiled in water with caution and reshaped to some extent but boiling water makes the gloves wet - and really hot!
