These are the two rod ends on the headlamp lifter linkage for a Ferrari 328. These parts (even if you could find them as new old-stock) are nearing 40 years old and are prone to being brittle.  When they break, the affected headlamp no longer lifts when turned on.

I spent many hours researching with different manufacturers, but the dimensions of the thread and the pivot opening are non-standard - it would take a hefty tooling fee to have these produced, then it would have to have been in batches of 1000's. With the advent of 3D printing, this becomes much easier. This has been fit tested it on a car where one of the plastic parts had broken, using the prototype I printed. For the production piece, I had them professionally printed in Nylon using SLS. It's been on the car for over 7 years and 40,000 miles with no signs of distress.

The model has a pair of rod ends: One with right-hand threads, one with left-hand (embossed with a L on the part). This is enough for a single headlamp's linkage.

Recommended printing:

Professionally printed via SLS or Multi-jet Fusion is the best, in my opinion. Use Nylon (PA12 or equivalent), Polypropylene (PP).

Self-printing:

  • Material: Nylon (PA12 or equivalent), Polypropylene (PP). Personally wouldn't use a composite for this as it is part of a moving mechanism, and composites might be abrasive over time.
  • Supports: None
  • Layer height: Best you can.
  • Infill: 100%. This is a load bearing piece. Don't skimp.

Disclaimer:

While a great deal of time was spend researching and designing these parts, these are in the end a hand-measured design and parts were installed only on a single vehicle. The fact that they seem to work on that one vehicle may be luck. Your own results may differ.
