A laser collimator should be (perfectly) collimated at the factory. If this is not the case, it is (theoretically) possible to collimate it yourself. However, if this is not possible - as in my case, because I had no way of turning the adjusting screws without damaging them - an alignment adapter can help.

Size

Designed for Baader Planetarium Laser Colli Mark 3, but suitable with other laser collimators with 1.25" connection (=31.8 mm) and length about 25 mm.

If you require other dimensions, you can adapt the FreeCAD file to your needs.

Part list

  • Printed adapter
  • 6 M3 thread inserts M3x5.7x4.6 mm
  • 6 screws M3 x 16 or longer, either ISO4732 (DIN 912) Socket head screw or ISO 7380 Hexagon socket button head screw, steel or stainless steel.
  • 2 hexagon Nuts M3 ISO 4032 (DIN 934) M3, steel or stainless steel.

Printing

~ 47 grams. Printing in PETG is recommended.
Nozzle 0.4 mm, Layer height 0.2 or 0.3 mm or variable layer height, no support needed, no brim, 4 wall loops, infill 8% or more.

Assembly / usage

See pictures. Tighten the clamp until it's still possible to rotate the adapter/laser but the clearance is as small as possible. Use the nuts to lock when you have found a good alignment.
