On the original series of Star Trek, this prop was seen in Season 3, Episode 1 “Spock's Brain” and Season 3, Episode 17: “That Which Survives.” The knobs turn and the buttons press. It is 100% printed.
The knobs have shafts that turn. There is a .2mm gap between the shaft and the knob, you might need to give it a good twist at the start to break it free. I use pliers to get a grip. It feels scary, but it works.
All parts are oriented as I printed them. It's a very easy print except I had to use supports for the side button hole in the body and the little arch in the base, everything else prints without supports.
I printed this one at .2mm height and used Variable Level Heights on the slope at the knob-end of the body to get a nice surface.
The whole thing is designed for single-filament printers using color-swap to get different colors.
I have made it my hobby to make models of obscure for forgotten props from Star Trek The Original Series to life. It was a show that fired my imagination in my youth and I'd like to bring Star Trek's message of hope and progress to anyone interested.
This is an obscure one, to be sure. This device was first seen when Dr. McCoy used it to drive Spock around after an Emorg (a woman from Sigma Draconis VI) removes Spock's brain in the first episode of Season 3, imaginatively titled “Spock's Brain.” The same prop is seen again, repainted and repurposed, in Season 3's 17th episode, “That Which Survives, ” when Spock used it it aid in the calculation of damage and repairs.
I've included insignia and tags for both versions. The insignia glues on the base and becomes part of the stand. Dr. McCoy was medical, so InsigniaMedical goes with TagRemoteControl. Spock was a science officer, so InsigniaScience goes with TagCalculator. On the back of the tag, I've started embossing the season, episode number, and title of the episode where you see the props. Obscure props need references.
I have to base the designs off pictures and get the measurements by guess and by golly. I try to be as accurate as possible. On a more personal note: I am insanely proud of this design, and I am learning more every day
In the spirit of Star Trek, this model is offered for free to any and all people.
