This type of controller provides great control over a rally book during competition. There are several companies building high end controllers, but most of them are located in Europe. At the moment that I’m uploading these models, there are no options available in America at this level. Another group in Colombia is making their own controllers, but I think this model may provide better ergonomics.
Since this is a very small niche and I don’t have the resources nor the time to keep building these on my own, I prefer to share with the community my 3D designs and what’s needed to build it, also with my findings after a fourth iteration testing other controller designs available.
The first controller I tested was StylesRallyIndustries, and although it fits well on my motorcycle (KTM 790 Adventure R) on other bikes it didn’t fit so great. Especially the button layout.
Then, I tested Dennis650 design, with an angled layout for the buttons, making it more ergonomic for riding. This design is only for the buttons box, which required to mix a little bit with S.R.I design to make it work.
Finally, I got my own design, inspired by the DMD2 layout (3 buttons, 2-way switch), and a different setup for holding the ESP32 and the step-down module. Also, is designed around using PG7 Cable Gland to ensure better cable holding and water tightness.
Assembly instructions are coming, for now I can provide with detailed instructions at fr4gus.com/maker (my personal website) which is in Spanish, but I'll be uploading the English version soon at Instructables.com
EDIT: 10/09/2025
This is the code I built based on Styles Rally Industries, but I added support for single/double/long press so we can add more actions with just 5 buttons. Code available here at Github a a gist.
