H0 scale train storage insert for IKEA Alex
This is a very simple, yet practical insert designed for IKEA Alex 60x42 cm drawers, made to store H0 scale (1:87) rolling stock.
Each drawer insert consists of 6 identical parts and in total one drawer will hold 15 compartments. To keep the rolling stock from moving around when opening and closing the drawer, each compartment has small raised “bumps” that hold the wheels gently in place.
Important note: Standard IKEA Alex have a design flaw - drawers don't pull out all the way! I designed this insert with a full drawer extension mod in mind (as you can tell from my pictures).
My design will of course work without that mod, but reaching the rear compartments will be much less convenient. There are several different mods out there to fix this IKEA Alex design flaw, also here on Printables. However, I used a mod from another well-known printing site.
Printing notes:
Very thin and doesn't use much filament, but it also doesn't need to take much beating so PLA will do just fine. Should work well with pretty much standard settings on any printer. I printed with 0.2 mm layer height on 0.4 mm nozzle and 15% infill.
I have noticed a slight variation on the Alex drawers. This model is designed to fit the minimum drawer length (420 mm). This means that in some cases you might want to scale up the model by 1 mm or so (length axis only!)
