openGrid Gadget - Plier Holder Generator

An open-source plier holder generator for openGrid. This model creates plier holders that screw into openGrid self-expanding snaps. It is designed around a stem for the pliers to hang on and a front stopper that helps keep them from sliding off.

Several example .stl files are included, with the parameters used to generate them in the file names.

Customization guide:

1. Choose "snap_thickness". Select "Standard" or "Lite", based on the snap version you are using.

2. Set "plier_count". Use 1 for a single plier holder, or increase it to generate a holder for multiple pliers.

3. Adjust the stem. Use "stem_top_width", "stem_bottom_width", "stem_height", and "stem_depth". These control the part the pliers hang on.

4. Adjust "transition_depth_ratio". Lower values keep the stem and stopper more distinct, while 1 merges them into a continuous slope.

5. Adjust the stopper. Use "stopper_width_scale", "stopper_height_scale", and "stopper_depth". Increase these values if the pliers need a larger front stop.

6. Optional: add a spring hole. Enable "add_spring_hole" for pliers with a spring. Use "spring_hole_radius" and "spring_hole_position_offset" to adjust the hole size and position.

7. Optional: set miscellaneous options:

   • "threads_type" - use "Blunt" for the default blunt-start threads, or "Basic" for compatibility with older or original snap designs.

   • "stem_top_rounding", "stem_bottom_rounding", and "stopper_front_rounding" - adjust rounding on the stem and stopper.

   • "thickness_text_mode" - control whether the snap thickness marking is added to the model.

The model is open-source under the CC-BY-SA license. Like all the OpenSCAD models I've designed for openGrid, it can be found in this GitHub repository. Feel free to use the code; feedback and suggestions are welcome.

2025-12-01 Update: Added "plier_count" allowing one model to hold multiple pliers. Added optional holes for pliers with springs.

2025-11-22 Update: The threads now have a blunt start by default, which should help prevent cross-threading and overtightening. Blunt threads have a decorative "lock" symbol at the bottom. If you want to use this model with David's original snaps, change "threads_type" to "Basic" in the customizer.
