This is a battery-powered frame for a 7.5" epaper display.  I am using this for my ePaper Weather & Very Slow Home Video Player project.  It can be hung on a wall, or use the included stand in landscape orientation.

Use the rocker switch to toggle between a video player or a weather display.  Videos are automatically changed to five frames-per-second, and the next frame is shown every six minutes.  That means one second of video time will take 30 minutes of real time to play.  The weather app updates at the top and bottom of the hour (every 30 minutes).

The panel is e-Paper, like you'd find in a Kindle.  Power is only used when changing the display, which remains visible while powered off.  It is powered by an 18650 lithium-ion battery.  A charge should last several months, and it can be recharged with USB.

The main mounting board is designed for a custom PCB (details below).  Attached to the PCB are:

  • Wemos D32 Pro microcontroller.
  • BME280 temperature/pressure/humidity sensor mount.
  • Three pairs of wires, ~4 inches.
    • I used 22 AWG, but smaller should work.
    • I added spade connectors on the end for easy connections.
    • One pair goes to a momentary button for refreshing.
    • One pair goes to a momentary button for purging cache.
    • One pair goes to a rocker switch for changing apps.
  • 8-pin female Dupont ribbon cable, ~2 - 4 inches.
    • If you don't have a ribbon cable you can do individual wires for all 8 pins.  They'll either already need to have a female Dupont connection, or you'll need to crimp it yourself.

The main mounting board has a built in support down the middle, it should snap off easily.  You'll need to include supports for the three mounting points for threaded inserts.  Additionally one of the four corners has a hole that needs a support (organic supports recommended).  The hex nut for the momentary buttons slides into a slot, which the button then screws into.  The rocker switch should simply snap into place, if you find its showing the wrong app just pop it out and flip it around.  18 U.S. pennies can be included to balance the weight of the battery, allowing the device to hang from a nail without tilting.

13 threaded inserts, with M3x6 screws, are needed:

  • Four to attach the bezel, which hold the panel in place.
  • Four to attach the back.
  • Two to attach the stand to the back.
  • Two to hold the screen adapter board (DESPI-C02).
  • One to hold the PCB in place.
