I’ve always been fascinated by the background world-building in Sci-Fi... the props that may not be the first one remembered, but make the universe feel lived-in. Owning a “hero” prop is cool, but recreating the obscure ones is even better for me. Don't get me wrong, the HAL Faceplates are incredible... I just want something less seen.
To that end, I’ve decided to replicate a clearly recognizable but less-attempted item from the film.
The above image appears during the HAL 9000 deactivation sequence (approx. timestamp 1h 50m 51s) when David Bowman decides it’s time to enter HAL’s Logic Memory Center and gracefully shut him down (basically a cinematic “sudo systemctl poweroff” for fellow UNIX nerds).
This key appears when Dr. David Bowman enters a code to open one of Discovery One's accessory doors, where the LMC Access Panel Key (and memory module unlock/eject key) is securely stored.
This model is a self-designed 3D model, referencing photos of the screen used prop. The interior key "cut pattern" is also taken from the film, where the inside of the key is seen (if only for a few frames), along with the look and shape of the access bolt it is used to turn.
There is only one, known, screen used prop, and that sold at auction years ago. The reference image from that auction is shown below:

In some of the images, you will see the HAL 9000 Logic Memory Center Placard that is also visible in the same scene. If you are interested in that process, please check out The Replica Prop Forum.
