🌬 C64 Breadbin Top Vent Fan Housing

The classic Commodore 64 "Breadbin" (the original chassis model) contains early-generation ICs, including the VIC-II, SID, and PLA, which are known to generate noticeable heat during operation. While passive heatsinks are the most common cooling solution, some C64 enthusiasts choose to install an active fan mod to ensure a stable, lower internal operating temperature for these components.

This design is a remix of the excellent original fan housing by Svenja's Designs (via Thingiverse link: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4573602), adapted for improved airflow and a cleaner installation.

Key Features & Design Improvements

  • Direct-Fit Top-Vent Exhaust: This housing is custom-fitted to sit directly over the C64's top ventilation slots, converting the case's passive cooling into an active exhaust system.
  • Fan Mounting Direction (Crucial): The fan must be mounted to ensure air flows UP and OUT of the C64 case, pushing the hot air through the housing and away from the chips.
  • Increased Plenum Height for Optimized Airflow: This modification helps reduce air resistance and back pressure, allowing the fan to move air more efficiently and potentially quieter.
  • Integrated Cable Management Posts: Posts have been added within the plenum chamber to allow users to neatly wrap and secure excess fan cable, keeping the wiring tidy and clear of the fan blades and airflow path. The caps for the posts are printed separately to remove the need for supports.
  • Integrated Cable Exit Slot: A clean slot has been incorporated at the rear of the housing to guide the fan cable out of the case without interfering with the fit.
  • Non-Destructive Installation: The housing is designed for simple, non-destructive installation using VHB (Very High Bond) double-sided foam tape (recommended) or similar adhesive.

Specifications

  • Compatibility: Classic Commodore 64 "Breadbin" case (NOT the C64C/Slim model).
  • Fan Compatibility: Designed specifically for a 50mm x 50mm x 10mm, 12V fan.
  • Mounting: Requires double-sided foam tape (VHB recommended).
  • License: Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY).

⚠ Wiring Note: Fan Power Source (12V Fan)

The C64's internal 7812 voltage regulator provides the required +12V DC, but the original circuit was not designed to handle the extra, continuous load of a fan. Drawing power directly from the internal 7812 regulator risks:

  1. Overheating and premature failure of the 7812 regulator.
  2. Increased electrical noise (ripple) on the 12V rail, potentially affecting components like the SID chip.

For safe and reliable operation, the fan's power should be isolated from the C64's main IC voltage rails.

Power Source Options for Isolation (User Assumes All Risk):

  1. External Power (Easiest & Safest Method): Power the fan from a separate, clean 12V DC power source (e.g., a small dedicated wall adapter) that is switched on and off separately. This method requires routing a thin cable out of the case but guarantees isolation and stability.
  2. Internal Isolated Supply (Requires Competence): For users who require an internal solution, the fan can be powered by creating a dedicated and isolated 12V supply sourced from the C64's 9V line (available on the User Port or PSU connector). This method involves internal electrical modification and requires competence in electronics to avoid damaging the computer. The user assumes all risk and responsibility for any internal modification.
