This model is a parameterized OpenSCAD program to create threaded adapters that can be utilized to make your standard filament spools reusable. After printing a set of these adapters, one can cut an empty spool in-half, install these adapters, and the re-use that spool as many times as desired -- for example, to hold filament that is purchased "spoolless" from eSun or other vendor.
The included .STL files are configured to fit spools with an 82mm hole. Precision of fit will depend on the accuracy of your printer.
Usage:
- Obtain empty spool
- Cut spool in half. Taking care to make the cut straight and near the middle will be advantageous later, and make the halves fit back together better. See pictures to clarify the direction of the cut.
- Measure the diameter of the hole in the spool.
- Measure the diameter of the "axle" that your 3D printer uses to hold a spool.
- Download and install the BOSL2 OpenScad Library ( https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2 ) if you haven't already.
- Launch OpenSCAD and open the .scad file.
- Edit the "Configuration" variables to taste. You will need the values measured in steps 3 & 4 here.
- Render the object in OpenSCAD.
- Export the object to .stl format.
- Proceed as with any other print from an .stl file.
- After printing, install the two adapters into the donor spool. Use adhesive if desired, but this is unnecessary if the fit is sufficiently tight. The pictured example is simply press-fit.
- Open package of spoolless filament, and screw together the two halves of your new reusable spool around it.
- After exhausting that filament, unscrew the two halves and return to step 12.
If your donor spool has an 82mm hole, you can skip most of those steps and just use the included .STL files. Male, female, and pair .STL files are included.
