update 2026/06/08 - reordered the Holder and fixed the Spool bodies to work with latest versions and when set to spool_iw of 'w 63'. Using FreeCAD v 1.1.1

update 2026/02/08 - fixed clip ends on 60° model.

Overview

This is a basic parametric desiccant holder designed to fit just inside the outer edge of a filament spool. It is useful for storage, especially in bags, and for use during drying. Note that if you want to use this in a filament dryer you will have to use some material other than PLA, such as PETG or other high temperature resisting filaments.

Simple attach three of the clips, fill with desiccant, slide in the lid, attach the last clip and push the whole thing onto the side of your spool.

It has been designed with a few different sizes as far as arc of a spool goes: 22.5°, 30°, 45°, and 60°. I've done a rough set of measurements to see approximately how much desiccant each holds for a 198mm diameter spool:

size

desiccant

22.5°

7g

30°

11g

45°

16g

60°

20g

Printing

Select the size you want to print and get a matching pair of lid and holder. In addition you will need two each of the left clip and two each of the right clip.

All pieces should be printed in the orientations provided, with no supports and automatic brim. This has been tested with PLA and PETG and with 0.4mm and 0.2mm nozzles (PETG or some other temperature resistant filament recommended).

Bridging needs should be minimal and thus within the capabilities of most printers. The horizontal struts were added to keep the individual bars from wobbling too much during printing, and thus should keep struts and gaps clean.

Post-Printing

In case you have printed more parts than needed at once, separate out a matched pair of lid and holder and then two each of the left clips and two each of the right clips:

Next, slid the lid in from the end and work back-and-forth to get it moving smoothly:

Then slide on three clips, skipping the one that goes over the corner where the lid slides in from. Make sure that the curves of the clip match the curve of the holder body:

Next, slide on the last clip and then perhaps work it slightly to ensure that you will be able to remove this one without too much trouble. It will be removed to empty and refill the holder:

Finally you should end up with a holder ready to clip on to the side of a spool (be sure to fill first):

Usage

Remove the one corner clip and slide the lid off in order to fill and empty the holder. Then replace the lid and clip. When placing the clips can be slid a little way away from the holder if the width of your spool is wider that the holder itself. Once clipped onto the side of a spool the clips will not be able to slide off of the holder, so things should be held in place well.

Customization

To customize things such as spool diameter or width, download the FreeCAD source, select the “Holder” object and change the properties:

  • spool_arc

  • spool_d

  • spool_iw
