Having looked into aftermarket Apple CarPlay stereos, it seems like my car's centre console doesn't have drop-in replacements because of how they designed the integration between the climate controls and satellite navigation option. Any products that might have worked are now discontinued, so I had to look into a custom solution.

Design Goals

  1. Deploy the newer 25W MagSafe charging capabilities.
  2. Use the tiny and excellent Apple USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter.
  3. Simple. Didn't want to spend too much time designing this since I already burned a lot of energy on researching CarPlay stereos.
  4. Easy installation and release.
  5. Sturdy-ish.
  6. Heat-serts because they're fun.
  7. I was randomly gifted a car vent phone holder by a coworker, so rather than reinvent the wheel, I just made an adapter that screws onto that. I don't know the make or model.

Reasoning

By themselves, the MagSafe and USB-C connections aren't strong enough to resist the forces from turns and potholes. By combining both systems, the result is a simple yet secure phone mounting system that is easy to insert and remove.

In terms of dB per dollar, you can't beat the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter. Look at the measurements on Audio Science Review:

Bluetooth audio quality is decent and getting better, and I even considered getting an AirPlay 2 adapter like the Belkin Soundform Connect, Eve Play, or WiiM Mini, but I just didn't find anything that I would prefer over a $10 dongle and stereo cable. No skips, no pairing, just vibes.

Tired: Wireless
Wired: Wired

The cable I got was the CableCreations 3 foot 3.5 mm audio cable with 90 degree connector. We all know that expensive audio cables don't impact the sound, ya? Anyway, I chose it because it's braided, sturdy, short,  and I got 2 for $14.

Sharing

I put great care into measuring and modelling everything to fit, both from the Apple Accessory Guidelines PDF and with my calipers, so please feel free to copy the STEP files for your own projects.
