Introduction
This insert is designed for the 2.5-liter variant of the SOCKER bucket from IKEA. Ours is the enamelled version, but it should fit the zinc-coated one just as well.
The insert serves three main purposes:
Creates a raised bottom under the soil so that excess water can drain away
Provides an inspection / venting / drainage shaft
The central column acts as a holder for a mushroom-style grow lamp
Printing and Assembly
The easiest way I’ve found to print this is in two halves (see the attached .3mf file). Print each half separately, flat side down, in PETG — no supports required.
Once both halves are printed, align the faces and either glue them, tie them together, or simply drop them into the flowerpot and weigh them down with soil. They’ll hold up fine even when left free-standing.
Use
This is not a self-watering insert. Its purpose is to improve drainage and prevent root rot by keeping plant roots above standing water.
The vertical shaft also helps with ventilation and allows you to pour out excess water if too much accumulates.
We mainly use this setup for growing chilli peppers on the windowsill, but it should work well for many other small potted plants too.
