Introduction

I recently replaced my network router with a Unifi Dream Router 7.  I can't say enough good things about the Unifi ecosystem and the devices they put out!  But I had read that this unit could get a little warm so I wanted to add some active cooling to the router to extend it's life if possible.

I also knew that I wanted to replace my ISP's Fiber Modem for many reasons.  So I planned on using the SFP+ port to run a WAS110 module.  These are also known to get extremely hot, so I wanted it to have dedicated cooling as well.  I found a couple models/designs that added a fan for the XGSPON ONU module, but it looked a little like an afterthought, which is fine in a server room.  The UDR7 is in our main room so I wanted to preserve the aesthetic of the UDR 7.

Finally, I wanted to power the fans without having to run an additional power cable so I wanted to incorporate a POE splitter to function as the power source.

Design Requirements

  1. These are the goals I set for myself:

  2. The fans must provide effective cooling

  3. The fans should be as quiet as possible

  4. The incorporation of the fans, POE switch, and WAS110 must be hidden

  5. Wire management needs to be considered

  6. Aesthetics must be preserved or improved upon

Parts List

  • M3 heatset inserts

  • Cool white colored filament to match the UDR7 case

  • 92mm 12v computer fan (I went with the Noctua NF-A9 FLX for noise and performance considerations)

  • 40mm 12v  computer fan (I went with the Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX for noise and performance considerations)

  • POE Splitter (I used this one, which I would recommend because its cheap, effective, and the design is sized to hold it well.)

  • XGSPON ONU Stick for 8311

  • M3x8mm and M3x12mm SHCS Fasteners

  • 12v 2.1x5mm DC Power Jack Adapter (I used these but any similar female connector will work)

  • 3mm rubber cord.  (I used this but you could print it out of TPU or omit altogether. It's not critical, but helps control airflow and maintain a nice fit.)

Basic Assembly

This is the process I used, but the order of these steps generally isn't critical:

  1. Heat set the inserts into the Skirt and Vertical pieces.

  2. Press-fit rubber tubing into the recesses on the Vertical pieces.

  3. Bond optional feet in recesses on legs of Lower Plate. TPU, felt, or any other soft vibration isolating material can be used.

  4. Mount the 92mm fan to the Lower Plate using the screws provided with the fan.

  5. Mount the 40mm fan to the vertical member using the screws provided with the fan.

  6. Mount the Vertical pieces to the Upper plate.

  7. Using the 3-pin adapter that comes with the fan, secure both fans to the female DC plug and set in the cavity between the upper and lower plates.

  8. Secure loose wiring using zip ties to ensure it doesn't impede the 92mm fan.

  9. Slide the POE splitter into the cradle on the Vertical member.

  10. Connect POE splitter to female DC Plug for fans.

  11. Secure Upper Plate to the Skirt.

  12. Install UDR7 into Mount and route wiring through access holes in the Upper Plate and Skirt.

  13. Install Spacer and Rear Cover by sliding into place.

  14. Enjoy your work!

After Thoughts

I was originally planning on mounting this to the wall, but I found a nice home for it near our home theater equipment.  But if this design is popular and someone would like I can easily add an alternate Lower Plate that incorporates a wall mount.  Please just let me know and I can make it happen.

I designed this for a 92mm fan, but an 80mm fan should also be more than adequate.  If there is a request to make an 80mm version of the Upper and Lower Plates, please let me know and I can add that as well.

As always, if there are any suggestions for improvement, please let me know!  Thanks and happy printing!
