I have been working with SMD parts under a microscope for quite some time, and have always used my big and bulky hakko fume extractor. While it works, it is very loud and takes up my precious desk space. I have looked up to see if am-scope or any third party company makes such a fume extractor, and while there are some out there, I felt that they are very lackluster and not worth the money. So I designed this!
This fume extractor uses a pair of 24v 40x40x20mm fans and a set in place magnet to hold itself on the microscope LED bar. I chose 24v as that is the voltage the light bar takes, and using a DC barrel jack splitter like the one in the BOM below, the whole system only takes a single outlet.
I also came to the conclusion that though I do work under the microscope, there may be times when I don't. Thus, this model is not directly attached to the microscope, rather a pair of long neodymium magnets are used to hold the extractor in place for normal operation. If you need to use the extractor outside of the microscope, the whole thing releases and stands on its own. You can also attach it directly to any ferromagnetic (iron) surface and use it as a portable small space extractor.
I did not include any built in grates or filters as there are plenty of models that can attach a grate and filter the the fans, so i leave that up to the user.
NOTES:
The Switch is quite difficult to get into the hole from the backside, but I found that slightly bending the rear wall of the upper shell is just enough to get a small 6mm switch inside. The just wire the fans IN PARALLEL. To attach this mount to an am-scope light bar, just attach another magnet in the pack with the included double sided tape and that is enough!
While i used 24v fans for this project to work with my am-scope, you can of course change the fans out for something that has higher cubic output, or lower voltage. What i have provided here has worked great for me
