Background:

This is part of a much bigger system design which is detailed here:  Mountain Bike Data Logger

Update 7-26-2026:  Updated design to use stainless bushings to give the calipers bolts something to clamp down on.  This was a major issue in the original design since one had to be very gentle to not torque too much and crush the plastic.  Even engineering filaments via a MakerForge were not strong enough.  The stainless bushing gives the bolt something to clamp to and the bushing is pressed into the plastic part with a little heat from a hot air gun.  Plastic is slightly thicker than bushing, bolt/washer will clamp on plastic before torqued load on stainless.

Detail:

The wheel speed sensors mount on the same bolt as the brake calipers.

  • The mount is identical front and rear.

  • It is likely compatible with most post mount disk brake setups but not tested.

  • I have included the mirror image in the part in case that works better for anyone.

  • So far no issues with heat warping but no serious testing completed.

  • Since the break rotor is steel, it is easy to detect with a standard proximity switch.

  • NPN proximity switch is used to allow A/D cards to detect grounded signal.

Print Settings:

I used PETG with 60% infill.  Organic supports were used but minimal need.

Parts Needed:

Fasteners Needed:

  • Existing caliper post mount bolt (insure length is sufficient!!!)

  • M3-0.5 x 8mm Flat Head Socket Cap Screws

  • M3-0.5 Square Nuts

  • M6x10x3mm Stainless Bushings

Installation:

Remove single caliper bolt and place sensor mount under head and reinstall.  Be sure to test that it detects the rotor as small adjustment maybe needed.  ALSO BE SURE SENSOR DOES NOT CONTACT ROTOR.

Disclaimer:

This is just an experiment and I make no claims or promises on safety. What you do to your bike is your business and your decisions. I am just giving ideas on how we can instrument our mountain bikes to learn. This project does add sensors very close to rotating components that could stop your bike quick. Install at your own risk.
