Why I designed this

Most HDX tote racks require loading from the front or back. I needed a rack that could load from the side due to space limitations in our area. The printed stops make the rack cleaner looking and prevent bins from sliding too far through the frame.

This project provides the 3D-printed parts for a side-load storage bin rack designed for Home Depot HDX bins. For our needs—and to make loading and unloading easier for my wife—we chose a configuration with one 27-gallon tote in the bottom position and five 14-gallon totes above it.

For the frame, I started with straight 2 × 4 lumber and ripped 1/4 inch from each side to clean up the edges, resulting in a finished dimension of 1-1/2 in × 3 in × length.

The bin rails were then ripped and cut from the dressed 2 × 4s to a finished size of 1-1/2 in × 1-7/16 in × 20 in long. Refer to Detail A in the drawing for the correct orientation of the 1-1/2 in width and 1-7/16 in height, which ensures proper fit with the 3D-printed components.

All wooden parts were finish sanded and coated with gloss Minwax Polyurethane.

The 3D-printed parts improve the finished look of the rack and also act as stops when inserting the bins (see animation).

The front-end covers are symmetrical and may be installed on either side; twelve pieces are required. The rear bin stops are asymmetrical and require six left-hand and six right-hand parts.

Printing Notes

  • Supports: Not required

  • Orientation: Print flat on the screw-insertion side for rear parts, front side for the front parts.

  • Perimeters: 3–4 recommended for strength

  • Infill: 20–30% is sufficient

  • Material: PLA works well; PETG recommended for higher durability
