Modular Desktop Organizer — Customizable Insert System
Every desk is different, and so is the stuff on it. This organizer was born out of the frustration of finding containers that are either too rigid to be useful or too ugly to want on your desk. The solution: separate the shell from the storage entirely.
How it works
The design is built around three components:
The outer shell (black in the photos) is the main structure — a solid, ribbed housing that sits on your desk and accepts any insert you drop into it. Print it once and never reprint it.
The inserts sit inside the shell and do the actual organizing. Swap them out whenever your needs change. No need to reprint the whole thing — just the insert.
Included in the files:
The outer shell (black base)
A divided insert with compartments for pens, markers, and small tools
Two open inserts for larger items (scissors, rulers, whatever doesn't fit neatly)
A STEP file of the insert, so you can model your own and make it fit exactly what you need — and if you do, please share it back here so others can use it too
Print settings
Any filament works for the shell — PETG or PLA, doesn't matter
Inserts print well in a contrasting color (or match everything, your call)
No supports needed.
Standard layer height (0.2mm)
The base of the inserts can sometimes make a bit of strange artifacts at the base of them, don't worry as it's only cometic (Will be tweaking the profile a bit more)
The STEP file
If the provided inserts don't work for your setup, don't worry, open the STEP in Fusion 360, FreeCAD, or any CAD tool and build exactly what you need. The geometry is clean and ready. If you design a variant, upload it as a "Make" or remix to make the system better for all. The more inserts are out there the better!
Share your makes! Especially if you designed a custom insert — tag it or link it here so others can find it.
