See this as a variant of the really well designed original. This is not a finished "thing", but similar to the original, something that can be used by designers.

Print instructions

This uses a little bit of an advanced assembly in print, by pausing at a certain layer height, placing the spring, and continue printing.

I used:

  • No supports

  • 0.15 LH

  • 0.6n

  • 3 walls

  • PETG

1. Print the spring

Print the spring as it is. You will only need one.

2. Slice the housing

When slicing the housing add a pause to the layer where the printer tries to print in mid-air. Your slicer will probably warn you. Ignore the warnings, don't let the slicer add supports. You will be fine since we are placing the previously printed spring in the print during the pause.

The layer where you add the pause should look like that and is at 4.9mm-ish height. Your printer will pause the print and wait for your confirmation before it acually starts printing this layer.

If you never added a pause in your print: your friendly printer manufacturer got you covered.

3. Print the housing

Start the print like you would do nomally. At the paused layer, your printer parks the nozzle and wait for a confirmation.

Now place your previously printed spring and place it into the print on your printer. Be careful not to knock it from the buildplate. Pay attention to the orientation of the spring.

Resume printing and stand by if anything goes wrong. The printer will start to "bridge" the housing over the spring, fusing them together.

After printing, remove any residues from your pause and you are done. No further assembly required.

I noticed that the first layer has a lot of influence to the overall tightness of the fit. If it feels too tight, carefully sand the layer of the housing facing the buildplate to your desired fit.

Design tips

Don't forget to leave some clearance for the spring to move. Also with this technique you can easily print this model in multicolor.
